This is a small maquette of my MFA thesis project. The project is a re-installation of Transmission Study. I discovered with that project that the surveillance video (highly politicized) was so conceptually heavy that the structure used to support the cameras was generally overlooked. Here was this soaring steel tower in my studio and all anyone could talk about was the video.
It was my doing, of course. The video, the chance to look back at my observers, is why I built it. But what I loved was the structure.
The best way to reclaim the structure would be to destroy its functionality. This also reconciled me to re-siting the work (if a work is reallysite-specific then this is practically impossible). It's a new piece, essentially, that utilizes an old piece.
And if you're going to destroy some thing's functionality, then you might as well do it in (faux) dramatic, theatrical fashion.
