Fabric, grommets

This work was my contribution to Phillip VonZweck's project "Temporary Allegiance" at the University of Illinois Chicago's Gallery 400 where artists were invited to contribute a flag to be flown for a month on a flagpole at the university. My concept hinged on the the synthesis of a red flag and a red carpet as a sign of both warning and welcome, revolt and invitation, the proletariat and the bourgeois, etc... Step onto the red carpet and you tread on the flag. It simultaneously interrogates and embraces the anti-institutional institutions of contemporary art, in which the artist may simultaneously resist the institution, while depending fully on the institution.
